Questioning Intuition: a Look at Insight

Research has found CEOs who score high on intuition take their companies to greater altitudes than those who rely largely on their heads.

Yet, intuition is widely misunderstood.

And strangely feared.

Recognizing that there are various kinds and levels of intuition, let’s play with insight.

It’s estimated that 80-90% of our minds are unconscious (I’m not sure how they came up with those numbers, given that it’s beyond conscious, but suffice it to say that most is unconscious).

There’s a limited amount you can be conscious of in the moment. Your mind filters out tons of information so you can focus on tasks and not go stark crazy.

But while you’re busy on your doing in the foreground, your subconscious is working away in the background. It’s absorbing all kinds of information and ideas that never make it to your conscious mind.

Plus, your subconscious mind processes information at a much faster rate.

Research suggests it processes about 400 billion bits of information per second. Compare this to your conscious mind, which processes about 2,000 bits per second.

That makes the subconscious an extraordinary resource to tap.

The subconscious is great at identifying patterns. It can flag danger, see gaps and identify possibilities that our conscious minds couldn’t put together.

It means that intuition is a very natural aptitude of whole brain thinking. Nothing to fear and everything to gain. Especially when it comes to abilities prized in leadership.
