Head, Heart and Gut Decision-making

Should I make decisions with my head or my heart?

It’s kinda the wrong question.

Research is showing that decisions are made through a combination of cognition, emotion, and instinct.

Today, the head, heart, and gut are all classified as functional brains. There are complex neural networks in all three.

When facing a decision, using the combined wisdom of your head, heart, and gut gives a greater level of self-awareness that will guide you to make better decisions.

In neuroscience, it’s called multiple brain integration.

The brain is one of the most complex organs in the body, composed of over 100 billion neurons that communicate along trillions of connections called synapses.

The heart has a mind of its own. Research shows that the heart doesn’t just take commands from the brain—heart-brain communication is a dynamic, two-way conversation.

The dialogue of emotion-based signals between our hearts and our brains is a silent, often subconscious conversation taking place inside of us, and yet is one of our most vital communications.

The gut brain is located in the walls of your digestive system. It consists of two thin layers of more than 100 million nerve cells lining your gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum.

Gut feelings are spontaneous, often from the unconscious, and can be of great benefit to both safety and happiness. Think gut feelings, butterflies in your belly, or sensing a subtle feeling of danger.

When you align your head, your heart, and your gut, you avoid internal conflicts or cognitive dissonance. You gain more wisdom.

Listen to your gut. Follow your heart. Use your head. Together, they’ll give you a fuller perspective.
